The Dragons Mouth : 2023 In Review

Well, that’s 2023 over with – and all it’s done is left us wanting more in ’24. We’d also like to thank you all for betting with us. We’re an independent family business and to have your support, win or lose, means the world to us.  

Being a bookie and a punter, you expect some highs and lows, and my goodness did we have a fair share of both in ‘23. 

For us Llandudno and Denbigh both brought about painful weeks at different points in the Cymru North football league – you can trust us when we say that people who bet on Welsh football (especially in the North of the country) are hard to beat! We can’t say how much they cost us in case the wives are reading but it was a lot.  

Another result – or more to the point group of results – that made the hitlist came courtesy of a 35-year record break.  

All four of the Welsh teams in the English leagues won on the same day during a weekend in November. The 80/1 we offered that it wouldn’t happen that weekend was one of our weekly Welsh Specials. It was almost like you people knew it was coming! We took more on it than we ever have before and it was beans on toast for dinner for several weeks afterwards.  

The highs (because everyone loves to hear about bookies winning) came during Cheltenham, especially on the Thursday when not a favourite was sighted. Mighty Potter and Shiskin both failing to win at short odds alongside 33/1 and 20/1 results is the stuff of dreams. To have them at the biggest meeting of all made it even sweeter. It was more like steak and red wine for dinner after that.  

The Rugby World Cup was high octane stuff. The big hitters come out to play at the big events and we took on some big action.  

As a Welsh man, it’s hard to enjoy seeing Wales not win but, that Argentina defeat was made a lot easier when we saw how much had been bet on the boys in Red.
