Gateshead v Wrexham: Match Day Preview

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson is confident his team can make it an astonishing 20 matches unbeaten on Tuesday night when they travel to Gateshead.

The Reds last lost a game way back on October 4, when they went down 1-0 away to Notts County, the only club above them in the Vanarama National League.

County – who lead the table only by virtue of two more goals scored than Wrexham – also play on Tuesday, away to mid-table Solihull Moors.

It means a victory, or even a draw for Wrexham, could take them to the summit if Notts County slip up.

Parkinson, though, has urged his players to take care of their own business and not worry about what may or may not happen elsewhere.

Gateshead may be occupying one of the relegation places down in 21st place in the table, but they have carved out two successive league draws and an FA Trophy win over Oldham in their three most recent matches and are on a five-game unbeaten charge in all competitions.

Highlights of that run included a 5-1 hammering of Gloucester City and a 3-0 win away at York.

So, Parkinson has told his team to roll up their sleeves and put a shift in before anything else.

There was something of a reality check for the Wrexham boss last weekend, when his side allowed second-from-bottom Maidstone to come back to 2-2 from two goals down before Aaron Hayden scored a late winner for the Reds.

“Gateshead will be another hard game for us,” said Parkinson.

“I saw them play Oldham the other week, they are different to the way Maidstone play. We have got to be ready for another almighty battle because they are another team who are scrapping for everything.

“Maidstone is a lesson for us that every game, if you are going to win it you have got to earn it every step of the way.”

When the clubs last met back in August at The Racecourse, Wrexham ran out comfortable 3-1 winners, although they were helped by the fact their opponents played for an hour with only 10 men after defender Louis Storey was sent off.

That defeat was the end point of a six-match winless start to the season for Gateshead, whose current five-match unbeaten run is their best of the campaign.

But these are heady days for Wrexham, who also have an FA Cup fourth round clash at home to Sheffield United to look forward to this Sunday.

It means they could conceivably start next week top of the National League and with a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup to look forward to.

Wrexham have no fresh injury concerns with striker Ollie Palmer passed fit following a stomach muscle injury.

Palmer is the club’s second top scorer in the league this season with 12 goals, seven behind leading hot shot Paul Mullin.
