JD Cymru South: Weekend Preview

Were there signs of a Barry Town United wobble last weekend?

Cambrian and Clydach will certainly hope so as they visit the runaway JD Cymru South leaders on Saturday .

It looked as though the Barry bus might be halted last time out when they were being held 1-1 by Trefelin BSG, only for the Jenner Park boys to pop up with an 88th minute winner.

With a nice eight-point cushion at the top of the table, Barry will be firm favourites to maintain that gap at home to Cambrian and Clydach, who are in fifth, but a massive 20 points behind their hosts.

The other big game of the weekend sees second-place Briton Ferry Llansawel welcome sixth-placed Carmarthen Town on Friday night.

The Reds may have that eight-point deficit to make up on Barry, but they have actually scored more goals than the leaders – 33 as opposed to 31 – so they will fancy their chances of more goals at Old Road against Carmarthen, who are coming off the back of a 3-1 derby home defeat to Llanelli.

That was an impressive win for Llanelli – and a satisfying one, too, given some of the heat between the clubs – and they are only two points behind the Ferry in third and have two games in hand.

They host Llantwit Major at Steebonheath on Friday night and will be looking to keep up the pressure at the top of the table.

Elsewhere on Friday, Abergavenny Town entertain Taffs Well, Afan Lido host Cwmbran Celtic, while Trefelin BGC visit Ammanford at the Pen y Pound Stadium.

Abergavenny moved out of the relegation zone last weekend with an impressive 3-1 away win at Cambrian and Clydach.

Things are still very tight near the bottom of the table, though, with four clubs – Ammanford, Abergavenny, Swansea University and Pontardawe Town locked on 19 points.

Pontardawe must wait until Saturday until they can affect matters, when they host Goytre United, while the students of Swansea Uni play in the other Saturday match.

They are away at Ynyshir Albions, who are 10 points adrift at the bottom of the table.
