JD Cymru South: Weekend Round-up – March 18th – 19th

With leaders Barry Town United not in action until Tuesday night, the focus in the JD Cymru South at the weekend fell on reigning champions Llantwit Major.

Llantwit are over 20 points adrift of Barry – so no title for the Major this year – but they did manage to extend their unbeaten run to eight games.

They picked up a point in a 1-1 home draw with Ammanford that keeps Llantwit in seventh place.

The visitors took the lead with a 22nd minute goal from Jordan Langley and kept their noses in front until an equaliser from Joel Woodington in the 65th minute.

It was an important point for the visitors, who are seven points off basement side Ynyshir Albions and a mere point ahead of Swansea University.

The students were still in touch with Afan Lido at the break in their home clash, Adam Orme levelling at 1-1 just before the interval after Mark Jones had put Afan in front.

Josh Webber and Ion Evans then hammered home second half goals to earn the visitors all three points in a 3-1 win.

Llanelli Town closed the gap on second place with a 3-1 win at Pontardawe Town.

Adam Robbins started the ball rolling on the half-hour mark, but Harri Lawson levelled three minutes into the second half.

Then, Sean Cronin and Brandon Griffiths added goals to make the points safe for Llanelli.

While Barry Town wait to travel to Goytre United on Tuesday night, they are hoping their striker and top scorer Kayne McLaggon makes the starting line-up when Wales C take on England C at Altrincham FC on Tuesday night.

England C triumphed 3-2 in the inaugural meeting at Barry Town United’s Jenner Park in 2018, before a 2-2 draw was played out at the Peninsula Stadium in Salford in 2019.

Former Carmarthen Town and Port Talbot Town manager Mark Jones will once again be the man in the dugout for Cymru C for the fourth time.

Jones said: “It was such a fantastic occasion last year so I’m sure everyone will be looking forward to it again.

“We know it will be a challenging fixture against a difficult opponent and we will have to be at our best to get a result.”
